For physical exercise, I enjoy riding the bicycle, especially cycle races. The yearly "Cyclassics" in Hamburg are an absolute must for me. The most important part is not winning, but taking part! A bicycle tour with my family on saturdays or sundays is not equally demanding, but a gratifying experience nontheless.

I like to spend my free time with a good book and in particular a thriller. There are few things as pleasing as a glass of good red whine to latin-american authors such as Skarmeta, Garcia Marquez or Vargas Llosa or the skandinavian crime thriller authors like Jo Nesbo or the icelandic Arnaldur Indridason, not to speak of Mankell and Markland. Similarly, I always look forward to new adventures from Jaques Berndorf and other authors of regional crime storys like Boris Meyn in Hamburg.

First and foremost there's my family and the - more often than not - scarce time to spend with my wife and kids. To rediscover the world together with our two sons (of 11 and 9 years) is an exciting experience.

Years ago I used to spend my vacations in scenic regions of the world. I backpacked in the glaciers in Iceland, the Kilimandscharo in Africa, the Blue Mountains in Australia, the Alaskan Ranges and the Andes in South America. That's, of course, no longer possible with two younger kids. Perhaps when they turn 14 or 16, we will attempt such a journey together.
